Pineapple was on sale last weekend-- $1.77 each!
I brought this one home and enjoyed it's beauty atop the fridge for a few days before chunking it up. With as tasty as this pineapple from the store was, I can't imagine how amazing fresh pineapple must be! Fresh and local is always best.
PS- it's almost mango season in Zambia...
sigh.
And once again I'm missing out.
Speaking of mangoes, do you have any tips on selecting good ones? I paid almost $2 each for 3 mangoes at the store, and pretty much had to feed them to the chickens. They turned out pale yellow, with brown spots, and bland.:-( Such a waste!

Oh my- sorry I never responded to your question earlier!
Deletehmmm. Picking good mangoes here is tricky (at least in Michigan and Pennsylvania-- where they don't grow). I can often get okay ones by feeling them and looking at the skin color. Typically I have to wait about a week after I buy them before they're ready to cut (the flesh will be a crisp yellow inside with a tangy bite instead of a soft and sweet deeper yellow flesh if they're cut too soon). Sometimes the ones we can buy here in the States seem more susceptible to having brown spots inside and rotting :(. Sorry I don't have better tips! I buy based on the look and feel... which is hard to describe!
